Kidney stone disease in 2022: filling the gap between the knowledge and practice

Following the many positive comments about the 1st symposium on Kidney Stones and Mineral Metabolism in 2017, the 2nd symposium was held in Musée de la Médecine, Campus Erasme, Brussels, Belgium on the 5th and 6th of May, 2022.
The symposium has been organize by Clinique de la Lithiase Rénale et du Métabolisme Minérale (CLIREMM) from University Hospital Brugmann, Brussels, Belgium in close collaboration with Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Nephrology and Charles and Jane Pak Center for Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX, USA.

During the 22 scientific sessions, the symposium covered multiple aspects of kidney stone disease including epidemiology, pathophysiology, evaluation, and management. The main goal of the symposium was to contribute to the improvement of daily clinical practice by giving attendees the opportunity to directly interact with international experts in the field.

In many developed countries, the prevalence of kidney stones (nephrolithiasis, urolithiasis) has increased significantly in the past 5 decades, reaching nearly 12%. Besides acute renal colic and obstruction associated with kidney stone passage, chronic complications of nephrolithiasis include chronic pain, infection, chronic kidney disease, and even end-stage renal disease. The associated clinical and economic burden make it an urgent problem for health systems.
